The Social Diary attended an “ultimate” Female Empowerment screening of SheRuns the World at Coco’s at Colette in NYC. This is the story of Allyson Felix, the most decorated Olympic track and field athlete in history. It’s also a film that changed social perspective. And challenged sponsors to view female athletes as more than just a commodity.
This special screening for members of the Tribeca Film Festival was a highlighted feature. This film aligns with The Social Diary’s advocacy to support and advance women’s rights and initiatives.

SheRuns the World Synopsis
This synopsis from SHERUNS the WORLD, edited for this story.
At the peak of her career, Allyson and her husband learned she was pregnant. However, their delight tempered by a concern that her sponsor—Nike—would financially penalize her. With their worst fears realized, a public fight for maternal protections in sports ensued.
Nike had proposed slashing her salary by nearly 70% even though it still planned to use her image widely. Nike eventually agreed to special protection for Allyson. Afterall, she was one of their most forward-facing women athletes. Allyson wanted maternal protections for all female athletes promised by Nike. Not just those few with clout. Nike refused. Allyson refused to accept favorable conditions offered to her specifically. She would not let other women battle it out for themselves. Allyson refused to back down and went public with their disagreement.
She walked away from the guaranteed income from Nike. Instead, she launched her own sneaker brand. The first ever designed specifically for women’s feet—and went on to unprecedented Olympic glory.
Allyson had successfully turned her personal and professional battles into a movement, compelling a billion dollar industry to change.
This is a longitudinal film. It features never-before-seen archival footage gathered over the course of 35 years. And delves deep into Allyson’s career and personal story, her family, her drive, her charm, her joy and her beliefs.
She Runs the World is a testament, how each of us can make a difference, by being true to our own values.
