Aptly titled, “Richard Morris Hunt: In a New Light,” the exhibition highlights his achievements through “lived experience.” In addition to being one of the greatest builders of the Gilded Age, he was also an avid collector. Additionally, he “aided his wealthy clients in acquiring significant works of fine and decorative art.” Here is his story.
Karate Kid: Legends
The Social Diary attended the special screening of Karate Kid: Legends, which felt more like a reboot or a redux of a reboot, depending on how you look at it. As a stand alone feature Karate Kid: Legends works. But as a continuing saga in the Karate Kid franchise, not so much.
Thomas Eakins at the Redwood Library
The Social Diary had the pleasure of attending the Opening Reception this past Friday, in honour of this year’s Coaching Weekend in Newport. Viewing The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand by Thomas Eakins at the Redwood Library was indeed a special treat. Coupled with the delightful photo of Bill Cunningham in Newport, in his “trademark” bright blue jacket.
Newport 1775 Exhibition
The Social Diary had the pleasure of attending the Opening Reception for Newport 1775 Exhibition on Thursday, May 15th. This historical exhibition presented by the Newport Historical Society is on view through December 2025.
The High Tea Misnomer
The high tea misnomer continues to rear its ugly head in America. Let’s be clear “high tea” is not afternoon tea with dainty “finger” foods such as sandwiches, savouries and sweets. High tea refers to a hearty meal served to labourers after a hard day’s work. Usually served between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
Ji Su Jung Percussion
Great Friends Meeting House in Newport was an ideal “rustic” venue for Ji Su Jung percussion performance. Additionally, this community concert series brought to you by Newport Classical, and presented by BankNewport is free and open to the public.
A Royal Recipe for Love Etiquette
The Social Diary presents A Royal Recipe for Love Etiquette 101. Hats, gloves and afternoon tea? Reel One Entertainment and Champlain Media presented another canned “Royally” themed film. These storylines are usually repetitive, with little substance, and mostly technically flawed.
LoveBash for Potter League
The 51st annual LoveBash for Animals took place on Saturday, April 5th at the Wyndham Newport, and raised over $175,000. This event was a celebratory gathering and a “LoveBash for Potter League,” a community staple for animals in need.
I-Heung Lee Classical Pianist
The Social Diary attended this delightful afternoon concert with I-Heung Lee Classical Pianist. What a perfect companion to our afternoon tea! Selections from Ravel, Chopin, Leschetizky, Liszt, Brahms, Czerny and a favourite from Gottschalk delighted guests.
Fête Champêtre Garden Party
The fourth Gilded Age Orchestra performance at Rosecliff covered the late 19th century at the end of the Franco-Prussian war. Additionally, the musical selections covered La Belle Epoque (“The Beautiful Era”), an ode to Tabasco and Fête Champêtre (“Garden Party”) at Chateau-sur-Mer.
