The Social Diary attended a conversation with Belle Burden on Strangers, alongside women drawn to the subject for personal reasons. Moreover, it reads less like a memoir and more like a touchstone. It resonates with women navigating infidelity and divorce because it reflects an experience many recognise, but few articulate. Deborah Goodrich Royce who moderated can relate.

Why Strangers by Belle Burden Resonated
Burden’s credibility comes from experience. Besides, she lived through it and came out with clarity and restraint. Her voice carries without force. She does not perform strength. She embodies it.
We listened as the conversation moved through authorship, identity, and what it means to tell your story when others are still part of it.
Burden spoke about her son with quiet certainty. She said she was proud of how he grew up. Further, that detail reframed the outcome of a fractured marriage. She acknowledged infidelity as part of a pattern rooted in her ex-husband’s family history. A cycle, not an isolated moment.
On finances, she admitted missing early red flags. The point was brief, but familiar. Many homemakers face uneven financial visibility by design.
She referenced a detail removed from the final manuscript. It involved a financial issue raised after her ex-husband reviewed an early galley. Therefore removed not because it lacked truth, but because it carried consequence.

On Strangers — Intentional Edges
What stayed with us was from a conversation with Belle Burden on Strangers was her presence — quiet, composed, and precise.
She speaks with a kind of quiet power — measured, deliberate, and controlled allowing the weight of her words to land without force. Soft-spoken, but with authority, her delivery resonates more deeply than performance.
At the same time certain edges felt intentionally held back. Not absent — just not fully explored. This left us with the impression that the sharper version of that voice exists — but reserved for spaces where the stakes, and the audience, are different.

After the talk, guests lined up for personal book signings and photos with Burden — a quieter continuation of the evening.
Hospitality Notes
Ocean House provided a simple, but well considered and delcious spread of Crudités with hummus, fruit and cheese, and popcorn, along with white wine and water with lemon. The tone stayed relaxed. The staff were friendly and efficient.
